| The course is intended to provide the student of literature with tools to analyze the structure of narratives. Narrative is not only a literary category. It is indispensable to our understanding of science, history, cinema, journalism, and the electronic media. Narrative is the way we think about the succession of events in time.
The course will combine discussion of this broader sense of narrativity with emphasis on narrative fiction. We will discuss theoretical texts analyzing various aspects of narrative, including plot, setting, point of view, and genre. In conjuction with the theoretical material, we will read a number of short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jorge Luis Borges, Angela Carter and others.
