A Documentary History of the Jews in Italy

General Editor: Prof. Shlomo Simonsohn

The aim of the project: To locate, identify and publish documentary material pertaining to the history of the Jews in Italy preserved in archives throughout the country. The systematic publication of these historical sources will provide a tool for research on the history of Italian Jewry.
· The first part (Lombardy - by Shlomo Simonsohn) has been completed and published in four volumes by the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
· The second part (Piedmont - by Renata Segre) has been completed and published in three volumes with the cooperation of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
· The third part (Umbria - by Ariel Toaff) has been completed and published in three volumes with the cooperation of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
· The fourth part (Rome - by Kenneth Stow) has been completed and published in two volumes by Brill, Leiden.
· The fifth part (Sicily - edited by Shlomo Simonsohn) will be published in eight volumes. Volumes 1-5 have already been published by Brill, Leiden, and Volume 6 will appear in the near future.
· The sixth part (Genoa - by Rosanna Urbani and Guido Zazzu) has been completed and published in two volumes by Brill, Leiden. Work is in progress on the following volumes:
· Tuscany (Lucca) (Michele Luzzati);
· Calabria, Puglia and Basilicata (Cesare Colafemmina and Sonia Vivacqua);
· Urbino (Alessandra Veronese).


Thus far, nineteen volumes have appeared and another one is expected.
 

 

Historical Lexicon of the Jews in Italy

This lexicon will encompass the history of every Jewish community from Roman Times to the Emancipation.

To date, three volumes have been published in the framework of this project:

· Volume 1, 1964-1973, edited by Daniel Carpi, Aldo Luzzatto and Moshe Moldavi, published by Carucci, Rome;
· Volume 2, 1974-1985, edited by Aldo Luzzatto, published by Franco Angeli, Milan;
· Volume 3, 1986-1995, edited by Shlomo Simonsohn and Manuela Consonni, published by Menorah, Rome;
· Volume 4, 1996-2005, edited by Shlomo Simonsohn and Manuela Consonni, in preparation.
