Library Catalogue

The focal point of the Mehlmann Library is the Mehlmann collection, donated several decades ago. Over the years, the library has acquired many other books and manuscripts on Jewish studies in general and on the history of the Jewish people and Eretz Yisrael in particular. The library, which is currently being renovated, houses over 100,000 volumes.

The many collections include:
· the bequests of Anschel Reiss, Prof. Berl Mark and Advocate Kossoy, all devoted to the history of Polish Jewry;
· the library of the researcher, Hersch Smolar, consisting of about 400 books, also devoted to Polish Jewry;
· a special Spanish-language collection on the history of Spanish Jewry;
· a collection on the history of Canadian Jewry;
· the bequest of Prof. P. Cherniak, devoted to the Holocaust and the accounts of several survivors;
· the bequest of Menuha and Moshe Gilboa, which contains hundreds of books;
· the private collections of Prof. S. Shapiro and Dr. I. Kedmi that include historic and literary materials in Hebrew and other languages.

The library also houses a large collection of memorial volumes of communities that perished in the Holocaust. Moreover, there are many periodicals in a variety of languages (including Slavic languages) published both in Israel and in the Diaspora.

While a considerable part of the collection is listed in the electronic catalogue, the rest of the material appears in manual catalogues by authors' names and book titles. There is also a separate catalogue of periodicals, microfilms and microfiches. A collection of some 1,500 rare books - some over 200 years old - is stored in the library safe and is available to anyone who is interested.
