Archaeology is a highly visual and image-oriented discipline. Photographic documentation of excavations and the objects recovered
is therefore a crucial aspect of research and publication. It is also a basic element in teaching new generations of archaeologists.
For most Institute projects, Pavel ("Pasha") is staff field photographer.
While field photography is central to the documentation of context, back in the studio, the artefacts uncovered are photographed on
film. Both field and artefact photos are then scanned and the digital images linked to databases so that any square, room, wall or
object can be connected to its larger context both graphically and textually.
