Unit Head: Prof. Elana Shohamy
The Unit serves as an academic center for research relating to both Hebrew language teaching and acquisition (as a mother tongue and as a foreign language), and the acquisition of other languages taught in Israel. The Unit develops models for both mother tongue and foreign language acquisition and instruction and it implements measurement and evaluation projects in foreign-language teaching.
The Unit conducts research for the Ministry of Education, Tel Aviv municipality, and research foundations in Israel and around the world. It issues a large number of publications and research reports.
Recent research projects are: developing a national linguistic policy for Israel; developing alternative tools for evaluating the language knowledge of immigrant children in Israel; research on teaching English to children in low SES schools; the significance of language education; the development of literacy in young and school-age children; models for reading comprehension and text processing.
