The School of Education plays a key role in creating and nurturing academic knowledge relating to the education system. Since this is a complex and multi-faceted system, research and development are also varied and multi-disciplinary. On the one hand, educational research touches on questions relating to the development and nurturing of the individual child - cognition, learning, intelligence, and problem-solving skills. On the other hand, it attempts to answer questions relating to the organizational, social, economic and technological structure of the education system - teaching, distribution of achievements, input-output ratios, the development of learning environments, and the use of computer and communications technologies.
The School of Education at Tel Aviv University advocates freedom of research and of expression, and supports researchers and research groups who initiate projects that meet internationally accepted research standards. While much of this research is conducted on an individual basis by faculty members, it is also done in organized frameworks which now include an institute, the Science and Technology Education center, and the following six subsidiary units: Human Development in Education, Education and Community Sociology, Language Acquisition and Instruction, School-based Curriculum, Evaluation and Measurement Research, and Jewish Education Research and Development.
Approximately 200 researchers are currently employed in the School's research system. In 1996, the regular research budgets at the School of Education totaled $4.3 million.
Research carried out at the School of Education has won recognition from educational policy-makers in Israel and from international institutions.
