Inter - group Conflict - A Workshop
1.
Jewish-Arab relations in the state of Israel.
This course was taught by Dr. Amal Jamal, Department of Political
Science and Prof. Daniel Bar-Tal, School of Education during the academic
year of 2004-2005. The course brought together Master's and Doctoral students
from many departments of Tel Aviv University. In total 52 students participated
in the course, which analyzed the relations between Jews and Arabs in the
State of Israel from various aspects. The course introduced the historical
backgrounds, discussed the psychological foundations of Jewish-Arab relations
and focused on five major areas of these relations: education, politics,
law, mass media, and land policies. Finally, it presented the dilemmas and
the solutions that both communities encounter in their attempts to construct
equal and fair relations.
More than just in content, the course was also unique in the way that it
was structured. Typically, each week two different guest lecturers, one Arab
and one Jewish, were invited to speak in the first part of the class. Later,
after they had each presented their perspective on their field of expertise
related to Arab-Jewish relations, they remained to answer questions from
students, and to respond to each other's different perspectives. In the last
part of each class, a discussion was led by Prof. Bar-Tal and Dr. Jamal,
about the topics instigated through the guest lecturers' talk.
