General Description
The Walter Lebach Institute for Jewish-Arab Coexistence
through Education conducts an annual competition for Master’s and Doctoral
students who study in Israeli universities and are writing a Master’s thesis
or Doctoral dissertation that promotes equality and fairness between
Jewish and Arab citizens in Israel.
The competition takes place each year in March and
only
students who are still in the process of writing their MA or Ph.D. research
are encouraged to submit their approved proposals.
Prizes (total $4000) are rewarded for the
best research proposals.
Eligible candidates should submit:
1.
A research proposal – 3-5 pages
that include the research's rationale and methods;
2.
A certificate of approval from the
appropriate academic authorities;
3.
A recommendation letter from the
research advisor;
4.
An academic C.V.
- The request should include the
candidate's address, phone number and email.
- All of the required materials for
candidacy should be submitted in 9 copies to the institute by March 31.

Rabia Husisy, Ph.D. student, Faculty of Education, Haifa University,
for her research proposal titled “The connection between legitimizing
the others'
collective narrative & adherence to one's own collective narrative
as a function of participation in peace education”.

Ms. Hannah Shemesh, Ph.D. student, Department of Islam and Middle Eastern
Studies, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, for her research proposal titled
“The shaping of memory in history textbooks in the Arab sector in Israel
(1948-2000)”.

Mr. Younis Abu el Hija, Ph.D. student, Faculty of Education, Haifa University,
for his research proposal titled “The institutes for higher education as
means to advance the social, economical and political status of minority
groups in different countries and in Israel”.

Ms.
Noga Einy & Ms. Nivin Eid, Master’s students, Behavioral Sciences
Department, Ben Gurion University, for their joint research proposal titled: "Learning
the other's historical narrative: Jewish-Israeli students' responses to
the Palestinian and Israeli narratives of the 1948 events as presented
in a new historical booklet published by Prime".
2004
In
2004 the committee chose the following prize recipients:

Mrs. Nihayah Dauod,
Ph.D.student of School of Public Health, The Hebrew University and
Hadassah, Jerusalem, for her research proposal titled “Explanatory
pathways to socioeconomic inequalities in health within the Arab
population in Israel”.

Mr. Youval Tamari,
Master’s student of Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, Technion
- Israel Institute of Technology, for his research proposal titled
“Identity and place in a mixed city in Israel- The planning implications
of the fear of the other".

Mrs. Najood Mzareeb
Sefadi, Master’s student of Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning,
Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, for her research proposal
titled “The unrecognized Bedouin village”.

Ms. Ayelet Girin,
Master’s student of Psychology Department, Tel Aviv University, for
her research proposal titled “Taking the bus, going into the mall:
Arab-Israeli's daily life under terror attacks”.
2003
In 2003 the committee chose the following
prize recipients:
Ms. Manel Tutri-Jubran, Master’s student of Law, Tel Aviv
University, for her research proposal titled “Wadi Alnasnas: Examination of
patterns of participation and opposition in the framework of law construction”;
and Ms. Merav Riklin-Shapira, Master’s
student of Sociology, Ben Gurion University, for her research proposal about
“Citizenship under the shadow of memory- Palestinian citizens of Israel, Rabin’s
murder and the Israeli discourse”.
