at THE MOSHE DAYAN CENTER for MIDDLE EASTERN AND AFRICAN STUDIES at Tel Aviv University Thank you for your interest in joining the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University. We hope this manual will help you tailor an internship with the Moshe Dayan Center that suits your academic and personal needs. Overview | Accommodations | Local Area and Transportation Internships at the Moshe Dayan Center can be part-time or full-time, are on a volunteer basis and are available to students who have completed the equivalent of three years or more of undergraduate university education (i.e., juniors, seniors, and graduate students). Interns are with us for a period of one to several months. Our offices are open from Sunday through Thursday, 9am to 5pm. The Moshe Dayan Center Research Library, where interns will conduct their research, is open on Sunday & Monday from 8:30 - 14:30, and Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 8:30 - 18:30, year-round, except for national holidays. To learn more about our library, click on this link. An internship with the Moshe Dayan Center provides a unique experience to work intimately with a group of world-renowned scholars and experts in Middle Eastern and African Studies. Customarily, our interns arrive at the Center with a particular research project in mind. Thus, prior to arrival, interns are encouraged to read the bios of our experts and to find a Research Fellow whose specialization coincides with the interests of the intern. Once you have decided on a project and an adviser, please send an introductory e-mail to dayancen@post.tau.ac.il. In the subject please type INTERNSHIP and your name. (Your query will be directed to the appropriate member of our staff.) In the body of the e-mail, please include the proposed dates of your internship, as well as the name of the Research Fellow with whom you would like to work. Please attach to the e-mail a one-page research proposal, and an up-to-date C.V., in two separate Word documents. The Moshe Dayan Center staff will verify that the requested Research Fellow is able to oversee your project. You will receive a response to your application within one month's time of receipt. The Moshe Dayan Center is home to one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of modern and contemporary Arabic-language newspapers in the world. The Arabic Press Archives of the Moshe Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University continues to expand, in both digital and hard copy formats. Interns have full access to the Archives and are welcome to glean sources from it, free of charge. In addition to research, interns are invited to conferences, seminars, and movie and lecture series hosted by the Center throughout the academic year. Please visit our Programs link to learn more about our activities. Interns may also be asked to contribute an academic article to Tel Aviv Notes, a bi-monthly online publication of the Moshe Dayan Center, which provides insight and analysis on current affairs and broader developments in the region. Internships with the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies are unpaid. However, if the intern has a financial sponsor, the Center will be happy to issue an official letter of invitation to the intern or the sponsor, as specified by the applicant. Please go to the About link on the home page of our website for a full explanation of our history, objectives, events and publications. Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies has established
a research assistance internship to honor the memory of Amira Margalith,
who served as the Center administrator for more than two decades. It was
Amira’s good nature and helpfulness that made the work of the Center,
its fellows, and its visitors so successful for many years. Through a
competitive application process, the Dayan Center seeks to appoint one
undergraduate (in the third or fourth year of study) or graduate from a European or North
American college or university setting to intern for one semester. Students who have a budding
passion for Middle Eastern Studies, are interested in undertaking quality
research under the direction of a Center member, and have special
linguistic and writing talents are encouraged to apply. The AMISTAU recipient
receives a $3,000 stipend to defray living expenses and
transportation costs. The grant is disbursed to the recipient in three $1000 installments
over the duration of three months. The minimum period for the internship will be three
months and include a minimum of 20 hours per week of work at Tel Aviv
University or in a location designated by the supervising Dayan Center
member. What are the requirements and application process for an AMSITAU award? Applicants for the internship are expected to submit the following: (1) a curriculum vitae (2) a 1,000 word essay about their career intentions and how the internship fits into those plans. Candidates should specify their area(s) of disciplinary interest. (3) three letters of recommendation, at least two of them from present or former teachers.
Those letters should speak to the intellectual promise, research skills
and experience, language abilities, writing talents, and other
qualifications that reflect on the candidate’s credentials. Letters
should also include mention of the candidate’s character, ability to work
autonomously yet with guidance, commitment to a future academic or
research position in Middle Eastern studies, and an estimate of how the
candidate ranks among former and present students of the teacher. Applications will be accepted up to February 28 of each year, with decisions made by March 30. Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Applications, including recommendations if sent directly from recommenders, can be sent electronically, with applicant's name in the subject header, in an attached PDF file to dayancen@post.tau.ac.il. If you prefer to send a hard copy, please address it to Director, Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, Tel Aviv University, Ramat Aviv, Tel Aviv, Israel, 69978 Successful applicants will be informed by mail and e-mail, with initial
disbursement of funds coming as a transportation reimbursement prior to
the student’s arrival in Israel. Internship candidates may not submit their
application materials via e-mail. How can I make a contribution
to AMSITAU? Initial funding for the internship was provided by Emory Professor Kenneth W. Stein who throughout his thirty year career benefited from the grace, diligence, and thoughtfulness emanating from Amira’s dedication and friendship. Additional contributions to the internship honoring the memory of Amira Margalith may be made by contacting the Director of the Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University.
